A site visit assesses safety, equipment, working practices and monitoring to comply with IRR17, RCVS Practice Standards and BVA Guidance Notes.

A report outlines any recommendations and local rules are issued for each use of ionising radiation.

It is expected that a routine site visit should be carried out every 3-4 years.

Note that all local rules issued before January 2018 will need revising to incorporate IRR17.

It is important to seek RPA advice prior to commencing a new build, conversion or relocation.

Primary beam and scattered radiation levels are measured with Raysafe X2 solid state detection equipment.

Measurements assist in defining the controlled area boundaries and evaluating the effectiveness of established shielding. Quantitative primary beam and scatter dose data lend precision to a risk assessment.

The Raysafe X2 R/F meter can measure kVp, dose, dose rate, pulse, pulse rate, dose/frame, time, HVL and waveforms simultaneously.

The Raysafe X2 survey meter can be used to determine X-ray scatter and tube head leakage.

A water phantom is used as a patient substitute.
